We were sorry to hear that actress Cicely Tyson died yesterday at age ninety-six.

But we were also impressed at her longevity and grateful that she not only had a chance to write a memoir, but to also speak about it on NPR.

Just as I Am came out January 26 and is currently an Amazon bestseller; it details her incredible journey from typist to model to actress and style icon.

She also doesn’t shy away from addressing the discrimination and racism that she experienced, both in her book and in her conversation with NPR’s Michel Martin.

You can listen to the interview below or read an edited version or complete transcript on NPR’s website.
