Spy novelist John le Carré, who died last December, had one final twist to share with us.

Known for his depictions of English espionage, le Carré actually became an Irish citizen before his death because of his opposition to Brexit, reports the Guardian.

His son revealed the citizenship change in a BBC Radio 4 documentary that airs Saturday.

Nicholas Cornwell said his father’s grandmother came from Cork, Ireland, and that le Carré was able to visit the town — and receive a warm welcome there.

Le Carré, who actually worked in British intelligence, was acclaimed for such novels as The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and The Honourable Schoolboy.
