Events around the world are returning in slightly — or significantly — different formats.

One of them, though, can cite political pressure and not just the pandemic.

The Associated Press reports that booksellers at Hong Kong’s annual book fair are keeping their offerings less controversial in years past, to avoid conflict with the national security law that China passed in June 2020.

One vendor told the AP that he and his counterparts are self-censoring the selections, to avoid any consequences that could harm the book fair.

News outlets have previously reported that while some Hong Kong bookstores are continuing to offer books that Beijing might consider provocative, others are culling their shelves a bit.
