The winner of the 2021 AKO Caine Prize for African Writing has been revealed.

Meron Hadero became the first Ethiopian writer to receive the award, which comes with £10,000 ($13,915), for her story “The Street Sweep.”

The award was launched in 2000 as part of an effort to bring African writing to a wider audience.

And so that’s perhaps why all five stories on the AKO Caine Prize shortlist are up online for free.
