This is not a joke: A British judge has sentenced a white supremacist to read classic literature instead of sending him to jail.
The UK newspaper Metro reported earlier this month that Ben John was found guilty of possessing information likely to be useful for preparing an act of terror.
But rather than up to fifteen years’ imprisonment, he received a lecture from Judge Timothy Spencer QC about his reading habits.
Spencer ordered John not to research any further right-wing material and to instead read such works as Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, and Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare.
John must share what he has learned from the classics when he reports back to court next January, according to Metro.
