George likely won’t be appearing on any future list of the most frequently challenged books.
That’s because author Alex Gino and publisher Scholastic acknowledged that they made a mistake in choosing the title, reports the Guardian.
The award-winning children’s book tells the story of a fourth-grader’s coming-out as a girl named Melissa, from being assigned the name George (and the gender of male) at birth.
Gino apologized to the trans community and the character over the summer and began changing the title to Melissa’s Story when signing books for fans.
Now, Scholastic — which initially suggested calling the book George instead of Melissa — has also apologized, and with Gino is reissuing the book as Melissa.
