Many media consumers prefer to see their favorite artists steer clear of politics.
But it’s hard to disentangle those parts of J.D. Vance’s life nowadays.
And no matter where on the political spectrum you fall, it’s hard not to appreciate the oddness of his rise to political fame.
Vance’s memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, launched him to prominence — specifically, the New York Times notes, thanks to avid interest in the book from the publishing world, journalists, and (later) Hollywood.
All of those industries are seen, accurately or not, as being decidedly liberal.
Yet in the years following Vance’s authorial success, his public commentary has changed dramatically.
