Award-winning author Russell Banks, who also saw two books adapted into movies in the 1990s, has died.

The Associated Press reports that Banks died Saturday at the age of eighty-two.

His critical breakthrough novel, Continental Drift, and a later one, Cloudsplitter, were both finalists for the Pulitzer Prize.

Meanwhile, his novels The Sweet Hereafter and Affliction each became a critically acclaimed film.
