I hosted a small Super Bowl party, with about the lowest stakes one could imagine — no rabid football fans, just four of my closest and longest-serving friends.

And yet, as I hastily finished up in the kitchen before they were due to arrive, I found myself wondering why I was making from-scratch snacks rather than taking shortcuts.
