Revisiting the 1960 bestseller "The I Hate to Cook Book"

I hosted a small Super Bowl party, with about the lowest stakes one could imagine — no rabid football fans, just four of my closest and longest-serving friends.

And yet, as I hastily finished up in the kitchen before they were due to arrive, I found myself wondering why I was making from-scratch snacks rather than taking shortcuts.

Everything was fine in the end, but it did align the stars for me to fully appreciate Eater's essay on the 1960 cookbook The I Hate to Cook Book.

Writer Aimee Levitt shares the origin story of Peg Bracken's subversive bestseller and even takes it into the modern era (one that hasn't quite embraced it like Bracken's generation did).
