Ian Falconer, whose artwork charmed adults and children alike, has died at the age of sixty-three.

For Falconer, 1996 was a pivotal year; in it, he both began illustrating covers for The New Yorker magazine and wrote and illustrated the children's book Olivia as a Christmas gift for his niece.

And, says NPR in his obituary, when the former caught the attention of a children's book editor, who had another project in mind for him, Falconer was quick to show her his draft of Olivia instead.

Olivia came out in 2000, with seven sequels — plus 10 million sales and a year-long stint on the New York Times bestseller list — following.
