While barbecues and picnics aren't the reason for Memorial Day weekend, they have become part of the tradition for many people.

So with that in mind, we're sharing a lovely food-centric excerpt from Kwame Alexander.

His new book Why Fathers Cry at Night: A Memoir in Love Poems, Recipes, Letters, and Remembrances came out last week, and in honor of the occasion, his publisher shared a passage at Literary Hub.

Grab a snack before enjoying Alexander's reflections on the legacy of love we pass down through food (plus a recipe for 7 Up pound cake) at Lit Hub.
