Congratulations to Abraham Verghese for being chosen as the 2023 Writer in the World Prize winner!
The award, established in just the past few years, grants $20,000 to a writer "whose life’s work embodies a rare combination of literary talent and moral imagination, helping us to better understand the world and our place in it."
Verghese fits that criteria as a writer who uses his experience as a physician to explore the link "between healing, the humanities, and storytelling," per the prize website.
His most recent book, The Covenant of Water, is a family saga, set along the coast of southern India, under the shadow of a curse: each generation features at least one drowning death.
Among its many honors already is the selection for Oprah Winfrey's book club.
