Some authors, observes Maddie Mortimer in the Guardian, are natural diarists.

While she herself is not among them, her late mother, Katie Pearson, did fall into that category.

And it didn't take long for Mortimer to dive into those journals after her mother's death.

Mortimer was just a teen, and so these notebooks had an incredible impact on her, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the, well, more complicated.

Her musings about relationships with the dead and the bond between fiction and journaling are up in the Guardian.
