In a conversation last night about small rural towns, I happened to make the comment of "the road," to which my companion joked "Yeah, like Cormac McCarthy."

Fittingly — or perhaps not coincidentally, since my companion is a bookworm too — yesterday would've been the author's nintieth birthday.

In honor of the event, Literary Hub excerpted early reviews for each of McCarthy's twelve novels.

The author, who died June 13 at age eighty-nine, is best known for Blood MeridianAll the Pretty Horses, No Country for Old Men, and, of course, The Road.
