On this day in 1890, author Jean Rhys of Wide Sargasso Sea fame was born.
She had been publishing for a quarter-century at that point, but the book reimagining the life of Jane Eyre's Mrs. Rochester was her first work to garner significant attention.
In honor of her birthday, Literary Hub has pulled together a number of contemporary and current reviews of Wide Sargasso Sea.
And for more on Rhys, you can consider reading Miranda Seymour's recent(ish) biography of her, I Used To Live Here Once, which The New York Times reviewed, or the piece it inspired in The New Yorker.
You can also see what Seymour had to say about her subject's works in the Guardian.
