Isabel Allende's first picture book comes out next summer

The next frontier for bestselling and award-winning author Isabel Allende? Children's literature.

The Associated Press reports that Allende has a deal for three picture books, beginning with Perla, The Mighty Dog.

Perla, The Mighty Dog, which comes out June 4, was inspired by the author's own rescue dog and is illustrated by Sandy Rodriguez.

Allende, a trailblazing female Latin-American author, has sold more than 74 million books, including The House of the Spirits and Daughter of Fortune.
