Happy release week to author J.M. Coetzee, whose novel The Pole came out on Tuesday.

The timing is apt, as the Booker Prize — which Coetzee won twice — revealed its shortlist in the same week. (He's also a Nobel Prize winner.)

The Pole is the story of an older pianist who becomes infatuated with a — married — patron of the arts who organized one of his concerts.

She gradually succumbs to his pursuit of her, but the question lingers: which member of the couple can be said to be in control?
