L.M. Montgomery is beloved for her Anne of Green Gables series.
But while Anne might be the favorite, she's not Montgomery's only fictional motherless adolescent.
Emily Byrd Starr made her literary debut one hundred years ago in Emily of New Moon and was, from the start, her creator's favorite.
"I have had more intense pleasure in writing it than any of the others — not even excepting Green Gables. I have lived it, and I hated to pen the last line and write finis," Montgomery noted in her journal.
So why does Anne outshine Emily? The New York Times takes a stab, with the help of one of Montgomery's granddaughters, at answering that question.
