George R.R. Martin didn’t plan on Fire & Blood: 300 Years Before A Game of Thrones being just the first part of a full-blown history of his fantasy universe.
As he explains to the Guardian’s Alison Flood, he’d simply intended to fill in a few holes in a fan-written coffee table book.
Hundreds of thousands of words later, he realized the project had long gone in an entirely different direction than just those few tweaks.
Which is entirely fitting, since the Song of Ice and Fire series itself started as a mere short story — until the characters and their complex world totally took over.
