No one would fault any author for being disappointed at missing the cut for an award.

Hilary Mantel’s exclusion from the Booker Prize shortlist, however, could have been seen as especially regret-inducing in her.

After all, had The Mirror and The Light gone from the longlist to the shortlist, she still would have had the chance to become the first three-time Booker winner.

Mantel told the Sydney Morning Herald that while, of course, she wished she had made the shortlist, she also found the decision “quite freeing.”

Now, she says, she doesn't have to wonder about the Booker result, which will be revealed November 17.
