Fans of Tennessee Williams may want to pick up the latest copy of The Strand magazine.
That’s where his short story “The Summer Woman,” written in 1952, has been published for the first time.
Strand managing editor Andrew Gulli told the Guardian that he’s not sure why “such a fine piece” was never published and instead languished in Yale University’s Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library.
The story follows an American academic who visits post-World War II Rome each summer, only to watch the locals’ attitude towards Americans grow increasingly hostile.
Williams is best known for his plays — including A Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and The Glass Menagerie — but he also wrote dozens of short stories.
