Today’s book excerpts come from all points in time.

From the past, we have several entries from Patricia Highsmith’s journals in The New Yorker.

The complete collection of the author’s private and decidedly uncensored musings, titled Patricia Highsmith: Her Diaries and Notebooks: 1941-1995, is set to be released November 16.

Highsmith is most closely associated with The Talented Mr. Ripley and its sequels, though she wrote other hit novels that also became movies: Strangers on a Train and The Price of Salt (known as Carol since 1990).

And from the nearly present day — though it feels longer ago, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic — comes an excerpt from Anthony Doerr's new release, Cloud Cuckoo Land.

This segment from Cloud Cuckoo Land alternates between Zeno and Seymour, whom we meet in early 2020.
