Oprah Winfrey didn’t choose a debut novel this month, but she kept with the theme of highly anticipated and celebrated.

Winfrey’s most recent selection is Bewilderment by Richard Powers.

Bewilderment is his first novel since the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Overstory; it’s on the National Book Award longlist (along with last month’s book club selection, The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois) and the Booker Prize shortlist.

The Associated Press reports that Powers is thrilled with the honor.

”‘Bewildered’ doesn’t begin to describe it,” he said in a statement. “This is among the most rewarding recognitions I’ve received over my 40-year career.”

Bewilderment is the tale of a widowed astrobiologist who turns to an experiment treatment method to help his troubled young son.

And on a related note — we recently passed the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of Winfrey’s first book club.

To mark the occasion, Literary Hub rounded up some statistics on Winfrey’s two book clubs, along with a list of all past selections, in case you’re curious.
