Which YA author has won the most awards in American literary history?
If you struggled to come up (or never came up) with Virginia Hamilton, you're not alone.
NPR book reviewer Maureen Corrigan admits to not recognizing the name, despite Hamilton's illustrious credentials: a National Book Award winner, the first children's author to win a MacArthur "Genius Grant," and the first African-American author to win a Newbery Medal.
Last fall, though, the Library of America released a collection of five Hamilton novels: Zeely; The House of Dies Drear; The Planet of Junior Brown; M.C. Higgins, The Great; and Sweet Whispers, Brother Rush.
That collection brought her onto Corrigan's radar — and into her heart.
