A Russian journalist has auctioned off his Nobel Peace Prize to benefit UNICEF's relief efforts in Ukraine.
The New York Times reports that Dmitri A. Muratov's medal brought in $103.5 million from an anonymous buyer on Monday.
The auction house, which will not take a commission on the sale, hadn't expected such a huge sum — for context, the previous record for a Nobel medal sale was under $5 million.
Muratov, the editor in chief of the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, isn't the first laureate to sell a medal to help support victims of an invasion.
He cited, earlier this month, Danish physicist Niels Bohr, who auctioned his medal to benefit the civilians of Soviet-occupied Finland.
Muratov said, in a speech before bidding on his medal began, that he hoped he would then serve as an inspiration for others to fundraise for Ukraine.
