Award-winning and bestselling author Marilynne Robinson has, obviously, a number of fans.

Among them? Acclaimed composer Caroline Shaw, whose second album with Attacca Quartet includes a piece influenced by Robinson's writing.

While "First Essay: Nimrod" takes its title from a biblical figure, Shaw said it "began as a simple exercise in translating the lilt and rhythm of one of my favorite authors, Marilynne Robinson, into music."

You can read more of Shaw's inspiration for "First Essay: Nimrod" in the New York Philharmonic program ... and listen to "First Essay" on YouTube.

Robinson’s Gilead series — comprising Gilead, Home, Lila, and Jack — has netted her several top literary awards including the Pulitzer Prize, the Orange Prize, and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

Shaw and Attacca Quartet's album, Evergreen, will come out September 23.
