A memorial service was held last week for author Joan Didion, who died in December.

Wednesday's event at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City drew friends, family, fans, and famous people alike, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Actress Vanessa Redgrave read; singer Patti Smith performed; and former Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy and, virtually, former California Gov. Jerry Brown spoke.

Didion's ashes had already been placed at a different ceremony in April.

For glimpses into the ceremony, including advice that her longtime friend Susanna Moore recalls hearing from Didion, head to the LA Times.
