Slate’s podcast One Year is neither new nor fully literary.

But we stumbled upon it and one particular episode from last season that seemed to fit our theme well.

That episode: “Roots: The Saga of Alex Haley.”

It explores not just the cultural phenomenon of the show (and book that inspired it), but also how Haley came to write the book … and how some came to question his work.

(Bonus: Reading Rainbow's LeVar Burton, who burst onto the acting scene as Kunta Kinte, chimes in!)
