Lan Samantha Chang’s The Family Chao was one of the year's most anticipated releases.

The novel, which came out February 1, follows the aftermath of the murder of Chinese-American restaurant owner Big Leo Chao, whose three sons fall under intense scrutiny upon his death.

Chang previously wrote Hunger and Inheritance and is both the first Asian American and the first female director of the Iowa Writers' Workshop.
