In the United Kingdom, romance novels have hit their highest sales since 2012 (the year of Fifty Shades of Grey).

The Guardian perhaps could've asked readers that question, but instead chose to chat with the authors of some of these hot sellers to hear their interpretations of the data.

In general, they agreed that tumultuous times have prompted many readers to seek something that would bring comfort — but, they noted, the cast of characters has expanded beyond the white, straight, cisgender people that once filled romance novels.
