Three men have been charged in a plot to kill an Iranian-American writer who lives in exile in New York City.

The Associated Press reported that the Justice Department announced the arrest on Friday, and Masih Alinejad confirmed that she was the target.

All three men are in custody, with one awaiting extradition to the US.

Alinejad's memoir, The Wind in My Hair: My Fight for Freedom in Modern Iran, details her work as a journalist both in and outside Iran as well as her activist work.

She told the AP that news of the plot to kill her has only strengthened her resolve and ability to speak out against Iran's treatment of women.
