Bookstores were among the many businesses fearing decimation during the COVID-19 shutdowns.

So the American Booksellers Association, a trade group for independent bookstores, is surely pleased to report on 2022's numbers.

The ABA has 2,185 bookstore businesses and 2,599 locations; it added 173 members last year and has almost 300 more members than it did back in 2019, according to the Associated Press.

And membership is at its highest level in more than twenty years — including more diverse voices than ever before.
