NPR is celebrating what would've been writer James Baldwin's 100th birthday in style.
Morning Edition selected some powerful lines from two of his works — the essay collection The Fire Next Time and the novel Go Tell It on the Mountain — along with experts to break down what makes those passages still so relevant today.
Four people who knew Baldwin well shared their memories of him, and you can also hear from the writer himself, in this rerun of an interview Baldwin did with Terry Gross, just a year before his death.
A bookstore bearing his name — Baldwin & Co. in New Orleans — had a blast counting down to today, too.
