This year’s Frankfurt Book Fair included, for the first time, an audiobook conference.

In the words of one industry executive, it was “the happiest room in the fair.”

That shouldn’t come as a surprise; the publishing-news world has been filled with trend pieces on the rise in audiobook sales.

But according to Michele Cobb of the Audio Publishers Association, listeners aren’t just rising in quantity — they’re also rising in quality.

“Fifty-six percent of listeners said they were just relaxing, not doing anything else when listening to audiobooks,” she said of U.S. bookworms.

“We’ve all grown used to the idea that we listen to audiobooks when we’re doing something else, but for some people that isn’t true.”

Check out the other insights and predictions from the audiobook conference at Publishing Perspectives.
