A frustrating truth of research in many areas — including science — is that the most reliable sources aren’t always the most accessible ones.

Dan Koboldt understands that peer-reviewed journals and textbooks can be difficult for laypeople to understand or afford; general science media, while certainly still accurate, lose a fair amount of nuance.

And don’t even get him started on the value (or lack thereof) of social media.

What you should ask Koboldt about, though, is the value of consulting experts for your fiction, and the proper way in which you should request their help.

He knows what he’s talking about: He’s the author of Putting the Science in Fiction, a collection of expert advice from scientists, engineers, medical professionals, and tech experts who help writers create realistic yet engaging stories.

You can check out Koboldt's tips in a guest post on Jane Friedman’s blog.
