Let’s reverse roles today — rather than us sharing expert tips, we’ll invite you to be the experts and provide the tips.

Namely, The Passive Voice is seeking feedback on social media for indie authors.

He has three questions for you — essentially, what are the best practices, what are the worst practices, and who is the best at them — that you can answer in the comments section of his blog post.

My social media tip is do not have a blog on the Goodreads platform. I did, and I got spammed with three one-star reviews on my novel TO LEAVE A MEMORY because some irate Goodreads users did not like one of my blog posts. That particular post was about readers leaving a one-star review without letting the author know why. Both of my novels are rated above 4.0 on Goodreads, so when a reviewer gives me one star, I truly want to know why s/he didn't like the novel. What I thought was a rather polite post turned into a firestorm of Goodreads users blasting away at me and several other authors who were defending me. And within hours, three of the more mean spirited Goodreads users dropped one-star reviews on my novel as a penalty for having an opinion different from theirs. And they blocked me so that I could not flag those reviews or write to them. I have written to Goodreads to ask for these three one-star spam reviews to be removed as violations of Goodreads community guidelines, but Goodreads has yet to respond. As a result, I am in the process of moving my blog to my Web site platform, where I can administer the discussions better. Needless to say, I will lose followers and blog readers. This has been a terrible disappointment, as I had 100 followers on Goodreads who read my blog at that address. It seems, however, that if an author ever broaches the topic of low-ball reviews, some Goodreads users who hide behind their anonymous profiles will bomb your work with low ratings and then block you from being able to contact them. Forewarned is fair-warned.
