It may seem counterintuitive to tell writers — many of whom are juggling that career with a day job — to write more and to write content that won’t be published.

But, as CM Hamilton points out, many great minds of the past were known to spend time on private or personal writing, which honed their skills and primed their mental pumps for public works.

Hamilton suggests engaging in “writing meditations” and provides three such prompts on Joanna Penn’s blog (along with further arguments in favor of this practice).

And if that’s too tangential to your novel for you to accept, you may prefer instead to check out Writer’s Digest’s odd ways to beat writer’s block.

Hope Bolinger, in a guest column there, lists nine writing prompts that she hopes will help you break through any mental barriers.
