A few weeks ago, YA novelist Angie Thomas requested that reviewers not tag her in their negative feedback.

The author of The Hate U Give didn’t ask that they change their reviews — just that she not be tagged in it.

Predictably, the internet reacted with a firestorm of criticism, but it also did inspire a splash of thoughtful commentary.

One such instance is fantasy writer Sam Hooker’s guest piece on The Creative Penn.

Hooker’s experience has been that it’s simply better to never read the reviews (a stance that Joanna Penn endorses — she has an assistant cull any quotable feedback for marketing purposes, and that’s it).

But if you must look at them, Hooker shares five truths that you have to accept about reviews for the sake of your sanity.
