If there’s one thing we’ve learned in life, it’s that you can spend as little or as much on a project as you want.

Home sound booths are no exception — Joanna Penn found kits going for $5,000 and up, though there’s always the option of putting an audio blanket over your head in a closet.

Penn has a middle ground to offer, though. Her producer shared an article with instructions for how to DIY an in-home sound booth, which ended up costing $930.

While that’s way cheaper than our most recent home-improvement projects, it’s still a significant amount of money.

For Penn, it was a worthwhile investment because her audiobook sales have doubled twice in the two years that she began narrating her own works.

Penn encourages authors to weigh in on their experience in the comments, which might help those of you with a tighter budget.
