Sophie Mackintosh’s debut novel was a smash hit, landing on the 2018 Booker Prize longlist.

But she too faced plenty of rejection before The Water Cure — from MFA programs, from agents, from publishing houses.

During those ego-bruising years, Mackintosh had no idea how completely normal the string of nos was.
