Vivid, developed characters are a key factor in how compelling your story is.

But don’t add characters just because you’ve had fun inventing them — you need to make sure their context is obvious.

That is, as Zara Altair explains, they clearly relate to the other characters in some way and fit in the story’s overall framework.
