“The pen is mightier than the sword” is an adage, but many writers perhaps literally live this saying — that is, they’re not especially familiar with violence on a close-up level.

Aiki Flinthart is an exception to that statement.

She’s a martial artist and an author, with twelve novels and a nonfiction work called Fight Like a Girl: Writing Fight Scenes for Female Characters under her belt.

Flinthart previewed some of the observations and recommendations she makes in the book in a recent conversation with Joanna Penn about fights of all kinds (but especially between female characters) and how to approach them in literature.
