From an outside perspective, shifting from one genre to another — or from fiction to nonfiction — might not seem like a big deal.

Writers, though, know it’s not always as simple as flipping a switch.

Kate White spent years as a nonfiction editor and writer (including time as the editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine) but has since devoted her creative energies to writing thrillers and mysteries.

Fellow author Cathy Shouse chatted with White about that transition in an interview posted on Jane Friedman’s blog — head over to learn more about how White thinks each type of writing affects the other and how some writers (including White) manage to balance both.
