Matt Hongoltz-Hetling has come a long way from his days as a content-farm writer.

He’s now a Pulitzer finalist, award-winning investigative journalist, and — most relevant to this post — a guest on Joanna Penn’s podcast.

Given his success in the narrative nonfiction field, Penn wanted to know how he finds his subjects or topics, what kinds of questions he asks to make his characters feel real, and how he juggles truth and storytelling, among other issues.

And if you’re fuzzy on what exactly narrative nonfiction is, they tackle that issue at the beginning of the episode, too.

Learn more about narrative nonfiction writing at The Creative Penn, where you can either read a transcript or listen to Penn and Hongoltz-Hetling’s conversation.
