Being as close as you are to your novel, it can be tough to identify what exactly needs to be revised in the second (or subsequent) drafts.

Susan DeFreitas, who’s an editor and book coach, has helped enough of her fellow writers over the years to recognize the most common weaknesses in early drafts.

She identifies three common issues in novels, gives examples, and explains how to fix them in a guest post at Jane Friedman’s blog.
