It may be Christmas break for most students, but C.S. Lakin has some assigned reading for authors who want to improve their craft.

That’s because the two most important elements to any scene, in her opinion, are writing style and microtensions.

The latter has a universal explanation, which you can read on Lakin’s blog, but the former will depend on your genre — the devices, language types, sentence structures, etc., will be different in a romance than they are in a thriller, for example.

What to do? Lakin says you must read popular books in your genre and see what those authors do, because clearly it’s what that genre’s readers are expecting.

For a sample case study (and more on each element), head to Lakin’s Live Write Thrive blog.
