Anne R. Allen spent months recovering from an illness that, fortunately, didn’t preclude her from reading.

And read she did — her ereader had over two hundred books on it, and she finished nearly all of them.

From that binge, she learned a few things beyond what a godsend ereaders have been.

Namely, that an amateur book (whether written by an indie author or a traditionally published one) was likely to display at least one of five basic characteristics.

Allen lists the five tell-tale signs of an amateur author on her blog.
