Your secondary characters may not be the stars of your novel, but author Kristina Adams suggests getting to know them just as well as you do your protagonists.

The caveat is, of course, that your readers won’t (and shouldn’t) get to know them as intimately as you do.

Sure, you don't want them to take over the main story, but without having a firm grasp on their motivations and tendencies, says Adams, they can’t contribute as effectively to the plot.

Adams shares more thoughts on how much you should share about your secondary characters at The Writer’s Cookbook.
