If you’ve been toying with adding political or social justice issues to your fiction, Keivon Burd has a pep talk for you.
The YA speculative fiction author definitely subscribes to the James Baldwin school of thought, that a writer’s sole duty is to “to recreate out of the disorder of life that order which is art.”
Burd and the authors who reacted to his post aren’t urging everyone to write a screed about everything that’s wrong in the world.
Rather, they want authors feel free to incorporate — overtly or discreetly, occasionally or comprehensively — the wrongs they see now and the rights they hope for into their fiction.
Burd’s call to action for writers to embrace social issues is up at Writer Unboxed.
