Introducing characters to one another can feel like a necessary item on a checklist.
But author John J. Kelley has noted that in writing he admires — whether it’s a book, a play, or a movie — those first encounters are thoughtfully crafted.
He opens a post on writing character meetings with the caveat that these are not the meet-cutes of romantic comedies, though the same principles can certainly apply.
Kelley offers a list of character needs to guide their behaviors in first meetings, along with an illustration of why these encounters are so critical to the rest of the plot, in a post for Writer Unboxed.
